Whats the best way to look for a place to rent in Auckland,NZ?

Me and my wife are planning to migrate to NZ. I am planning to get a low cost house or apartment in Auckland wherever there is a public transportation.I cant afford tht much. Any help would be appreciated.

Auckland is the most expensive place to live in New Zealand. However, it probably has the most employment opportunities too.

Trademe is like Ebay and its our number one website in NZ for finding rental accommodation.

You will need to check everyday and be quick as rental properties go really fast.

Another place to try is through our largest real estate agency Barfoot & Thompson.

The closer to the CBD you are the more expensive the rent will be. Best to live close to where you work as traffic during rush hour in Auckland is a nightmare. So if you have a job in say West Auckland then best to live there too.

Don't rent on the Northshore (over the harbour bridge) and try commuting to the city to work. The bridge traffic jams will drive you insane. Gulf Harbour is not a good option - its miles from anywhere.

Public transport is mainly by bus around Auckland. The trains are ok but there are only a few lines and its not user friendly unless you live and work close to a train station.

An appartment is probably your best option and they are plentiful and alot cheaper than a house.

Cheapest areas to live are:
West Auckland - Massey, New Lynn
East Auckland - Panmure, Mt Wellington
South Auckland - Manurewa, Papatoetoe
North Auckland - Glenfield
Central Auckland - no where really, but check out appartments and you might get a good deal.

All the best for your move to NZ. Its a great friendly country. You will be very welcome here :-)

Hi there yes the first answer is correct! check out Trademe Website
i recommend the best place to look for rental properties in Auckland is Gulf Harbour, they call some of the rental properties a renters dream, as gulf harbour is really nice but you can get a bargin in rentals like $300 week for 3 bedroom is really good also $350 for 3 beddy isnt that bad either. here is the link; http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Category...

As for public Transport, if you are looking to get into work at Auckand City then you can catch the ferry from gharbour. there are also buses!

I live here and do this and love it thats why i recomend!!
the north shore isnt that bad either. it would be ideal to live and work in the city but it is just to expensive there

anyway good luck!!!!

I suggest you try http://www.realestate.co.nz/rental it is a site that compiles the current rentals from all the various real estate agents, it will save you lots of time compared to looking though the individual sites. I have found my last couple of places though this.

I disagree with comment about North Shore being a bad place, I lived in Birkenhead for 3 years and I can reccomend it, close to town and a lovely place.

Out west is cheap so is some areas out south, but as always you get what you pay for and some areas you really dont want to live in. I suggest getting some sort of serviced apartment for the first couple of weeks and looking in person at areas. A property can seem ok from a picture and map but when you get there there is a great big powerline over your house (common out west).

A word of advice is that no property agent is likely to take you to view a house unless you have done a 'drive by' and like the property from the outside.

Good luck, I emigrated 4 years ago and I love it here, first 6 months are usually tough but then it gets a whole lot better.

Personally I think the North Shore is a great place to find somewhere to live, its central to everything ,you can drive, bus or ferry to the city.I lived in Glenfield for several years and loved it
Try trade me,or www.rentexnz.com,(they are looking after our rental house, and brought heaps of people around to look at our place!Good luck
