I am looking for a good hostel in Auckland to start my trip with.

Try YHA (in Auckland and throughout the country.) Usually they're of a far higher standard than the ordinary backpacker hostel, and only slightly more in price.

They are all over. I would suggest going to downtown Auckland. They have like 3 in the same street. It's around a lot of clubs that you can jump around to and from. There were so many backpackers staying there and they all seemed to enjoy it. It's also great because you can also go to the waterfalls or the beach and either way, they're not that far from the hostels. You'll have a great time! Enjoy!
