Chucking it all!?

I am considering chucking it all, buying a motorcycle and hitting the road. Is there anyone out there that has done this? Any websites specifically for doing so on a bike? Costs? etc...
let me know!

You could look up websites on biking organizations or groups, on the internet, or check yahoo groups and see if there are ones for motorcycle enthusiasts. First of all , if you have never driven one before, I would take the driving course for motorcycles as they are tricky to handle for a novice. I would get some mileage , driving time, under my belt before heading out across country, and then you will at least get where you are going in one piece. Then I would try to find a map showing where all the motorcycle clubs across America are located ,so you have a port in the storm no matter where you travel. They would have references of the best repair shops, lodging, and other information that the average car driver might not have access to. If there is a national Club, join it, and then if you want someone to be there for a check in you have it. For instance, if you aren't sure about reaching one destination from the one your at, tell them you will be checking in periodically to make sure you're on the right course and to let them know you are safe, and then when you reach your destination, call and let them know. At that juncture, check in with the branch there and after deciding your next location, make a similar arrangement. This ensures that you will be found should you run into a problem , if you don't check in within a reasonable amount of time. Just be sure to keep track of the time so you check in when expected, so they don't worry for nothing. It's good to have someone who knows your itinerary as you travel . If you are well off financially and money isn't a problem for gas and food and lodging ,for an extended time, then you are all set there. If not however, be prepared to be able to do odd jobs when the chance comes along, even if food and lodging is the exchange, as this will be your bread and butter until you either decide to go back home, or you find a place you want to settle down . Food banks and soup kitchens , you will want to find the location of, in case you are low on money or food or both. Buy a good helmet and good protective gear ,emergency kit, water,and learn to handle that hog, and make the road your home . I would invest in a good one man tent ,in case you need to have quick shelter from weather,and a warm sleeping bag. Remember to treat the people along the way with respect and kindness, as they are your new friends and family. And if you have family or are considering leaving your wife and kids behind, don't. Let them know you need a break, what you plan on doing, and make sure you check in from time to time, to let them know you are okay. Being and feeling free, doesn't have to mean being thoughtless. Good luck and have a wonderful adventure.
