What is the best small town outside of Austin to live in for a young couple with 2 young kids.?

I have lived all over Austin and constructed many buildings there over the last 45 years so I have a good feel for the neighborhoods and suburbs. I like the Dripping Springs area for a number of reasons. For you the quality of the school district will be important and they are good. The living style is more rural than Round Rock or Georgetown which remind me so much of North Dallas (Ugh!). There's not much appeal to Cedar Park, Leander and Jonestown since the urban sprawl there leaves a lot to be desired (More North Dallas). Really little of interest out East toward Manor or Taylor. Bastrop not bad but terrible commute into Austin. Don't go out to far since $3 per gallon gasoline makes a lot of commute miles costly.

Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock...all are good neighborhoods...ask a local realtor for specific school info...you'll will find many excellent choices...and of course it comes down to how much do you want to spend?

Lockhart is a great place to raise a family and the cost of living isn't that high.

Round Rock, they were just on the news as one of the safest cities in the nation to live. Also, it's a nice place to live. It's right outside of Austin.

Round Rock. I lived off of Pack Saddle Pass (don't remember the name of the neighborhood offhand) but it really had a community feel. We had block parties in the summer, all the neighbors near me all got along great and hung out together and it is really a quiet place to live. I miss my old street and neighbors. It is also very affordable and kid friendly.

My Lab was terrified of thunder storms and she always escaped form the backyard during the storms. She would go house to house scratching on doors until she found someone home. They always took her in and called me on my cell to let me know who's house she was at. Everyone loved Loosie. That's the kind of neighborhood it was.
