Relocating to Austin, looking for a rental?

My boyfriend and I are moving to Austin in May and I am going to be attending UT, he will be working in the Barton Creek area. We don't have too much $$ to work with, maybe 1000/month. I have tried to do research on the Internet for rentals (townhomes, apts, houses) but I can't find anything decent. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look or where to live close to those areas?

PS-- not moving there to party

Definitely check out Barton Springs Apartments on Toomey Rd.!

I lived there for several years and it is awesome. We paid about $850 for a 1 bedroom and they have two bedrooms as well as a 1 bedroom/plus study set-up as well. I don't know if they have gone up in prices or not...but, it should be reasonable. It is locally owned and the manager is on site and quick to fix things. They have been renovating them for years, so most have wood floors and granite countertops.

The best part is that they are across the street from the hike and bike trails...there is an entrance next to a baseball field. So, you are right on town lake, near barton springs and zilker park...some of the best parts of Austin. It is also a decent bike commute to U.T. or there is a dillo bus that picks up right outside and takes you close to campus. It is so close to all the best parts of Austin.

If not there, you can sometimes find stuff in Travis Heights...but, it is generally a little expensive because it is such a cool area. Hyde Park(not close to Barton Creek, but, bikeable to UT) is also an option.

Craigslist is a great place to look, though. Just stick to central or southcentral Austin.

Good luck!

Try craigslist.

Craigslist is a good beginning - you could even post what you are looking for. Word of mouth or driving around - don't look right before school starts because everything is taken. Summer months are a good time to look or right after school is out. Good luck on trying to live on $1,000/month in Austin!
