Austin Texas for Radiologic Technologists?

I will be taking the registry from ARRT in June '09. Thinking where to relocate. Would like some place that is not as red-neck and bible-thumping as I perceive Nashville to be. Also very important to me is: the cost of living; clean air; climate (humidity), cultural activities (jazz, orchestra, theatre, community bands, etc.), vistas (I know the mountains are great but is it overly flat in Austin?), public transportation or reasonableness of commute time from affordable housing (i.e. what is the commute time from some of the Northern suburbs to downtown?), integration of seniors and x-generation (ie are people age 55+ a viable part of the community?) Also does anyone know the starting salary for new grads for RT's? This is very important to me and I would prefer knowledgeable answers that address as many of my ?s as possible. Thank you!

Austin is the music capitol of the world so you'll definitely get your fix of music. We have a variety of music festivals and all ages, race and whatnot (dogs) attend. Commuting will be the big problem. Since so many companies have located in Austin, so have the employees and man has Austin grown! I came here in 1972 from Boston and well, I'm still here! If you can stand the summers without AC, then you'll love it here. It is beautiful hill country and the drive out to Lake Travis is very scenic. The cost of living has grown since republicans got in office and it keeps increasing. Price of gas now is $2.99/gallon. As for salaries, check out this:

I am a RT in California, so I cannot answer many of your questions. But, I wanted to tell you about a large salary survey that the American Society of Radiologic Technologists just completed. You can see how much RTs average, yearly, in Texas (or any of the fifty states). You can also see the average salary of a RT, who has cross-trained in CT or MRI here:
