What relatively free stuff is there to do in Austin, Texas for New Years Eve?

I know parking will cost, but since my friends and I are newly free from school, we don't have much moneys...

Well, the cheapest thing would be to find a house party....but, if that is not an option......

Try 'First Night'. It is a huge parade that winds through downtown Austin and over 1st street bridge to Auditorium Shores (on the lake). There are fire works there and it has a fun festive atmosphere.

You could go to Zilker Park on Town Lake...the Christmas Trail of Lights is still up there and quite beautiful...the park is lovely as well and you could bring your own alcohol or even rent a canoe and watch the fireworks and downtown from the water.

If you want to party harder...you can always park somewhere near sixth street and just hit up the bars that don't have a cover. Though...I think that you would end up spending a lot of time looking around for a cheap/good place rather than drinking and partying!

So, lots of stuff going on downtown and some of it is free.

P.S. There is no boardwalk in Austin...unless the person meant the Town Lake hike and bike trail!

Have a great New Year's !
