What are the best and affordable sections of austin texas to live in?

Depends on what you deem affordable.

The last place I lived in Austin was the Four Points area. That's where 620 and 2222 meet. It's far west Austin (close to Lake Travis), and was a 20 minute drive to work (290 and MoPac), but the area was nice, far enough out that we didn't have a lot of problems (well, except for the deer). It's not exactly convenient to downtown.

I paid 600 a month for a huge one bedroom apartment, and the 2brs were 700 a month.

I would try south austin off 183 and william cannon area, nice area with minimal illegals and bums yet not too pricey...

South Austin is nice, 78704, 78745. 78757 is better for family and is central.

Look into the Circle C Ranch in far SW Austin. about 10-15 miles from downtown. This is Austin's largest planned community but away from the hustle and bustle with lots of open space. Very quiet & natural setting. Lot's of young families and growing. Very safe family oriented area with very good schools. Many amenities including a swim center with an Olympic pool and a new kiddie pool. Good range of home pricing from moderate to high-end/upscale. Growth is done environmentally friendly as SW Austin sits on a protected aquifer, so laws prevent overbuilding, so the area is much more natural and open area with lots of oak trees. Located near the Lady Bird Wildflower Center, a biking veloway, Circle C Golf Club, and most importantly, only 10 minutes away from The Salt Lick barbecue restaurant.

South of Austin if you are looking for sqft for the price and ease of access to the city.
