Houston & Austin ? Pros and Cons?

Tell me the pros and cons of living in (or near) these cities.

Answer ONLY if you have lived or live in Houston / Austin.

Gez NM, pretty unfriendly. You don't sound like a Texan at all !

I came to Austin in 1972 when the Armadillo was still open and you could leave your doors open and everyone was friendly. There were no traffic problems - it was a fantastic music friendly town. Then all the outsiders came in - tore down the Armadillo, created traffic hell and the once laid-back town of Austin became the condo-mecca of the world. It sucks now. It takes at least 30 minutes to go anywhere if you are lucky enough to get there. I say a prayer to the Austin that was for no one would recognize it anymore. I'm still here though so I guess that says something for it. We have the best music (music capitol of the world), shows (SXSW) and even the Rolling Stones came and played in our town park. Nothing else like it!

I have lived in both. Houston for 11yrs. Austin for 1 1/2. Houston is very ( how shall I put this? ) "tough", but has every thing you could want (except peace and quiet) within range.
Austin has changed alot the last time I passed through it.But its like a college town, urban yuppie kinda thing.The country side around it is much prettier.If I had to pick definitely Austin,no question.

Houston = hurricanes
Austin = no huricanes

Don't move to Austin. We don't like outsiders coming in unless they already have a job set up, have family here, or are attending the university. You won't have any friends.
