Austin texas? after graduation?

im grad this may and im thinking about moving to austin. im going to grad school in san marcos and im going to commute. do you think its a bad idea to live in north austin?!? i wanna work in austin too.

I think that Austin is an excellent place to live right out of college. It is a fun, energetic town with a lot of active and interesting people. There is tons to do, lots of great music, and wonderful restaurants. It is a great city in which to be young! That being said, north Austin, like Round Rock...is NOT Austin. You will be in overdeveloped strip malls with none of the charm and funkiness that is "Austin". You will also be commuting more than living and having fun. San Marcus is a good 30minutes from central Austin with NO traffic.

So, I would either move to central or south central Austin, where you can take full advantage of the city and not have as big of a commute. Or, move to San Marcus, which is a cute little town. This way you can be a bigger part of the graduate school scene there and be more involved. You can go into Austin on weekends.

I hope that this helps! Good luck to you!

I livedin austin, I didnt go to college, but I worked there and lived in north austin...well actually round rock, I loved it!

Well i would say with the new toll road, traffic shouldnt be that bad. Avoid 35 because its awfull if your gonna go north from san marcos. I hope this helps.

It's a terrible idea to live in north Austin. All it takes is one wreck on 35, especially over Town Lake and you are stuck on a parking lot. Traffic on 35 can be awful. Go south to avoid traffic.

Keep in mind Austin is a university city so jobs can be hard to come by. All the University graduates want to stay there also.

Good luck to you in grad school.

The drive will kill you.

Living in NORTH Austin and commuting to San Marcos several times a week will be a real pain. There can be traffic on I35 in Austin any time of the day. The new tollways are marginally faster, but not enough to make it significantly better. Expect to go through a lot of gas and spend a lot of time in your car.

Look for a place south of town, there are many nice areas, the old rule of "North of the river" really isn't true any more. Avoiding downtown during rush how will cut your commute in half.
