Hill Country, Fredrickburg Area, Bed and Breakfast, Winerys, and Brew Pubs?

I know this is not an Austin question, but you guys are closer to the hill country than any of the other cities listed. My husband and I are thinking of going to Fredrickburg for our Anniversary on the 29th of Feb, He prefers beer, I prefer wine. I thought we would split the diff and go here as someone told me there is a brew pub and a winery. As well as some great B&B's. Anyone have any suggestions, or even know the name of the brew pub and it's location in comparison to the winery (or are there more than one)?

There are a lot of different wineries, but none that are actually in Fredericksburg or that will be close enough to compromise between the wine and the beer. My suggestion to you would be what my husband and I did on our anniversary to Fredericksburg last year. Stay in Fredericksburg, somewhere close to Main Street and do a driving tour of wineries one morning/early afternoon. (before the crowds!)

The B&B that we stayed in was Cook's Cottage. It was fantastic, we stayed in the actual cottage, but they have other rooms. It's very private and really comfortable. This year we'll do Fredericksburg again, but will probably stay at Hoffman Haus, another B&B close by that gets great reviews at decent prices. Our neighbors stayed at a Bed and Brew, it's a B&B that is in the same building as a brewery. They liked it a lot, but mentioned that they'd try another place next time. www.yourbrewery.com

Three wineries that are great and are really close to one another are Grape Creek, Torre di Pietra and Becker Vineyards. They're basically across the street and next to each other.

Becker Vineyards also has fantastic lavender fields and they make their own candles and products. If you're a red wine fan, try their Claret, it's really great.

In terms of dining, we only went out to a nice restaurant one of the two nights that we were there. We went to The Nest, and it was fantastic! Be sure to make reservations. www.thenestrestaurant.com

If you'd rather a fun place to go with live music, check out Hondo's. When we went they had a live band playing, and all of the tables outside have Connect Four to play. www.hondosonmain.com

Well, Happy Anniversary! You couldn't have picked a more romantic spot!

I have stayed at many bed and breakfasts in and around Fredericksburg. I have never had a bad experience. I usually go through Gastehaus Shcmidt....it has an office on Main Street with over 100 b&b's indexed(with pictures and all the information on ammenities, price etc.). You can check them out online at http://www.fbglodging.com/ or just drop by. They pick the best of the best places as they are local.

There are a lot of wineries around as the last person went into such great detail about...so I won't reiterate. Most of the nice restaurants in Fredericksburg have great wine lists which include a section devoted to Texas wines. My two favorite places to dine are Navajo Grill and Hannah's on Main. They are both on main street and are excellent fine dining establishments. Hannah's has a really warm and cozy environment with lovely furniture and is in beautfully restored stone building. There are hidden booths in a back nook if you want to go all out romantic. The food here was delicious!

The pub/brewery you are talking about is Fredericksburg Brewing Company on Main. It is great for a microbrew and a burger. Also, be sure not to miss some good German food while you are there. Auslander has great authentic German and a nice beer garden. (it is on main st. as well...are you noticing a trend? :) )

If you like to hike at all...be sure to visit Enchanted Rock State Park about 20 miles away. It is a huge granite dome rising out of the hill country landscape...the hike to the top is steep(although short) and definitely worth it for the views!

Of course, you will want to go shopping on Main st. There are so many great stores with antiques/clothes/gifts,etc. Park your husband with a beer at the brewing company and shop away! :)

Enjoy your trip. I hope this helps!
