Are all German highways are called autobahns, or is there only one "Autobahn"?

The "Autobahn" is a network all over Germany. They cover G. completely from North to South and from West to East. There are normally 2 or 3 lines for each direction, near cities more. The name is "A" and a number, exits have a own number in a circle, the traffics signs are blue with white letters. No speed limit, but 130 km/h rec., near cities 120 km/h. Cars normally have a internal limit near 280 km/h.

The next category are "Bundesstra脽e", the connection betw. Autobahn and cities. Signs are yellow with black letters. Speed limit 100 km/h or less. The name begins with "B" followed by a number.

In cities the limit normally is 50 km/h, sometomes 30 km/h ~ 70 km/h.

I believe the autobahn is like our interstate system, more then one road

autobahn is a german word meaning a major high speed road, for motorized vehicles.

Like the US, Germany has a system of local streets, highways (where you can drive a bit faster (70 kph, [kilometers per hour], which is the equivalent to approx 43 mph)) and the famous "Autobahns".

This latter group consists of high speed two to four, occasionally 6, lane, median separated highways. They are equivalent to our "freeway" system; or if you come from New York, the "through-ways" of NY.

The Autobahns therefore are present all over the country and connect major cities, much like we might have a freeway that connects Tucson and Phoenix, for example. The speed limit is not posted but understood to be 130 kph (78 mph) but if, weather and road conditions permit, you may drive faster. How much faster? Actually, as fast as you wish. Sounds interesting, huh?

One proviso! If you get into an accident on the Autobahn at rates of speed in excess of 130 kph, (and you live to tell about it), and it is determined that you exceeded a speed that was safe for weather conditions at the time, the condition of your car, your tires, etc., you will be heavily fined.

There are people who drive the Autobahns at 200 or 220 kph (120-130 mph). They are often driving precision automobiles and have experience with the roads. Still, they are very lucky.

My advice. Be safe.

By the way, the amount of the fine is often linked to your ability to pay.

Safe driving!
Auf Wiedersehen.

NO!! there is only one Autobahn and that is like the US Interstate system.
