What is the best way to find a place at this point in time to stay for octoberfest. As cheep as possible?

you are pretty much out of luck. they prob wont have any hotels left. last year i calle din may and they were all booked. if you end up there make sure you go to the tents early like 10am. if you get there later they are soo full you cant get in

some bushes, the ground?

Your best bet will be to try to find something around Freising instead of Munich. I think you can take the S-Bahn (commuter rail) stright into Munich from there. It'll be cheaper anyway. If not Freising, also try Pfaffenhofen or even Ingolstadt....which is about 72Km away...you'll either have to drive, in which case I like to park my rental at the Olympia Stadion or take the train....you can walk from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) or you can take the U-Bahn (subway) to the Theriesiensiese from there. But as far as staying right in town? Good luck! I tried to book for Oktoberfest in March once and was way too late already!
