Apartments in Bavaria??

Hello, I am concidering moving to germany for school with my boyfriend who is in Germany. He is looking into a school in Bavaria and So I am starting to research cost of living in different areas in german. I am not having much luck! Does anyone know average rents prices for a one bedroom apartment...nothing fancy!?? I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks! :)

First, Southern Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg) are among the pricier places to live in Germany. The most expensive cities rental-wise are Munich, Stuttgart and Frankfurt am Main and places within commuting distance of these cities.

I looked on the internet and according to this document http://www.muenchen.de/cms/prod2/mde/_de... you'll have to pay around 400 EUR per month basic rent (ie plus heating, electricity, water, etc.) for a small appartment for you and around 600-650 EUR basic rent for a small appartment for 2 people in Munich. These numbers are from the social welfare department - it is what they consider appropriate rent for people who are on social welfare in Munich. Since the welfare department pays the rent in these cases, you'll have a very very hard time finding anything cheaper in Munich. Rents in surrounding bigger cities are generally lower, the further away from Munich the better.

To compare: in Berlin the rent the social welfare department considers appropriate is 444 EUR - for 2 people including water, heating, etc., which equals about 250 EUR basic rent per month.

About the only place in Bavaria with a uni that has decent rental prices for students should be Passau. (I studied there myself in 2000, feel free to email me if your friend is looking at that uni.)

If you are both on a tight budget (and as foreign students you'll be) do yourself a favour and look into uni's in Eastern Germany. Magdeburg, Rostock, Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Berlin, Frankfurt/Oder, Greifswald, etc all have good universities.

Bavaria is a large area with big cities and wide rural areas, so it's hard to give a general figure. You could go to immobilienscout24.de and just look around and see what you'd have to pay for an apartment of the type you want in various locations. Munich, obviously, is very expensive.

Also, under this link, you'll find a "Mietspiegel" (overview of average rent levels) for a number of Bavarian towns. I'm afraid it's in German, and some of the info is a bit dated. But you'll get a general idea - prices are givenin Euro per square meter.
