Bruges or Brussels? Best place to go for a day...?

Bruges or Brussels? Best place to go for a day...?

I'd say Bruges...
It's much more picturesque then Brussels...
You can compare Brussels to Amsterdam....big city, I lot to see...and you can compare Bruges to Venice...much smaller, also a lot to see and with beautiful canals...
Besides, the chance that people speak English to you is much bigger in Bruges then in Brussels...

Depends on where you're coming from and what you want to do.
If you are an American I bet you'd prefer Bruges over Brussels. Be aware that after 18h the streets are empty in Bruges and there's nothing to do.
If you wanna go to more trendy places, shopping, museum, ... etc. then go for Brussels.

I agree with LateD-Kay. Bruges is more picturesque but Brussels is more lively. There are also plenty of historic sites in Brussels too. It might be the best of both!

To make your choice more complicated : Antwerp is a very interesting city as well... and Gent too !
If you have a car, it is possible to see two cities the same day, provided you have a quick lunch and do not visit any museum.
