Is is true that there are lots of house robberies in Santiago now?

Is it safe to go?

Yes, it is true especially in the eastern neighbourhoods of La Dehesa, Lo Barnechea, Las Condes. There are bands who enter these neighbourhoods and go into apartment compounds and robb people in their houses. Policemen have caught many bands but it's not enough and neighbours are organizing watches and hiring private watchmen and guards.
However, Santiago is still a safe city to visit so as a tourist you wont have any problem if you take the necessary precautions.
