A question about air ducts in new homes in our area?

I know this isn't anywhere near a travel question, but I really needed some Cincy opinions. We bought our home about 2 and 1/2 years ago. It was a market home so it was finished before we moved in (approx. 3 mths.). My question is that it seems as if our home is always dusty and my allergies are driving me insane. We do have a cat and a dog, so I make sure we buy the best filter possible for our furnace and I change it every month. Also, we are nonsmokers, so we are not getting any pollution from that. However, it seems that our heat isn't working as well as it should and like i mentioned my allergies are killing me. I also clean like a freak all of the time!

I am wondering if we should have our ducts cleaned. Has anyone had this done so early in a new home? Is it because of our area, which is known for allergies? Our house is approx 2700 sq ft, so I don't know if size makes a difference or not?

Our subdivision was new when we moved in (we were the third house), but construction has now moved to the back of the subdivision.

Anyways, I welcome all opinions on this matter, especially if anyone works in this field.

Also, our house is all electric so their is no gas to contend with or WBFP.

Thanks!

Having your ducts cleaned will help with dust and stuff but they shouldn't be super dirty if they are 2 years old. I don't know much about the allergy thing but the above answerer seemed to hit on that. (btw, I accidentally thumbs him down, I was going for an upper but hit the downer! Sorry).

As far as the heat not working like it should, I have noticed a lot of people with electric heat using heat pumps, these are only efficient when the temperature is above thirty degrees. If it is below that, which it has been here lately you would want to switch over to your back up heat source.

you can try duct cleaning about $100. I used to be in charge of commerical buildings and it worked and improved the heat and ac. why not try that first.

Welcome to Cincinnati... Allergen capital of the Midwest. I don't think the problem is in your heating ducts. While the construction & pets don't help the situation, Cincinnati is know for having high mold and pollen counts. (We even report them in our weather forecast).
As for your heat not working, your new home has a new high energy efficent furnace. You save money, but they blow air much cooler then the old furnaces. It does not have anything to do with the pollin, mold, pet dander and dust in the air.
I would not spend the $100 on cleaning the ducts, use the money to invest in Claritin. Welcome to Cincinnati!...

Unfortunately people to visit Cincinnati experience allergies. Cincinnati is located in a valley so everything settles here. Therefore we have high mold, pollen and dust. Growing up, I used to have to get shots. A shot for dust and a shot for pollen.

To answer your question, getting the air ducts cleaned may only temporarily solve the problem. You will track dust and pollen in when you enter the house or open any doors. All you can do is clean/vacuum your house often and have a good filter for your furnace. Definitely do not open any windows. Maybe having hardwood floors/no carpeting may help as well. Think about getting an air purifier. The Sharper Image sells one. My friend bought one from there.
