What is the cheapest way to do the top end of austalia from victoria australia?

Fly to Cairns. Stay in a hostel for a week. Whilst you are there buy a car...eg a Kombi or something.Theres plenty of travellers buying and selling vehicles in Cairns as it's international airport is a great gateway for overseas travelers.
we bought a kombi for $1000 and sold it afer our trip for $1100.
This might not be an option if you are alone, but saying that you get to go where you like when you like. Sleep in the Kombi save on accom, and theres always people that throw in for gas to go places.
