Which is the best way to drive from sydney to darwin - via sth aust/alice or queensland?

I have done the drive both ways and prefer going through South Australia. The roads are better, there is more to and lots of nice places to stop on the way. Just watch out for cattle, kangaroos and any other wild life once you hit the outback.

Just over 5 years back I drove via sth aus and alice. Didn't really look at going the other way but by going Sth you get to see Melbourne, Great ocean road, halls gap, adelaide, port augusta (not a highlight of the drive), coober pedy (worth a visit), ayers rock and the olgas (a 100% definite must), alice springs, daly waters (tiny place but well worth a night in the pub), mataranka thermal spring (great for the hangover after daly waters), Katherine (and it's gorge). At this point I went west to go the long way to Perth. Can highly recommend this route, though as I said at the beginning I'm not really in a position to compare it to the Queensland way.

U should drive up 2 townsville then reach Mt.Isa via Charter Towers (QLD) then Tennant Creek - Katherine - Darwin.

It depends on the time of year and your exact route through Qld. The Gulf Country can be problematic with flooding in the Wet (November - March)

Depends on the time of the year.I always go by the weather; When its Summer time,its wet in the north so I would attempt it when it is cooler as its usually dry.1,Leaving Sydney drive S.E. to the Flinders Ranges taking in Wilpena Pound.Then head north to Coober Pedy for your opals and then on to Alice Springs taking in Ularu,Kings Canyon,Simpson's Gap,Standley Chasm etc.Then on to Darwin via Batchelor and Kakadu.2,Leave Sydney and head N.W.to Tippaburra and on to Cameron's Corner to Birdsville taking in Milparinka and Innaminka(not far from the Burke and Wills Dig Tree)From Birdsville north to Bedourie along Diamantina country to Boulia where you go west along the Donohue Highway to the border where it becomes the Plenty Highway that comes out on the Stuart Highway about 50klm north of Alice Springs.There are so many ways of doing this trip.I've done both these trips and have seen every type of vehicle doing it.A 4 wheel drive would be nice, but the family Commodore does it easy. If you want to go via Queensland, go straight up the F3, which is pretty much a straight road, very long straight road! Then when you get to Queensland stay on the freeway and you will see signs that say Darwin, so you head left!

Ahh probably a car would be the best option

in a vehicle of some description,but make very sure it is mechanically sound and carry drinking water as well as water for radiator.Many a person has perished for lack of drinking water!

I've been along both. my favourite is the sth aust / Alice but that depends on how much time you have. don't forget petrol gets awfully expensive the further out you go. expect to see prices around $2 a litter! so you might want to think about the Queensland trip and believe me, that's a excellent trip! Longreach saw the birth of QANTAS, they have a museum that's worth seeing. also the stockmans hall of fame is at longreach, that's also worth a look. don't forget the flying doctors had it's origins in the longreach area.

That is a really long drive,
you'll need loads of cash,
petrol prices are through the roof
Wouldn't it be better to take a jet?
Would be cheaper & quicker

I lived in Sydney some years ago, but I had no reason to go to Darwin. To be safe I would take the train, strange things happen to travellers in the outback. If you still wanna drive take a friend.
