I'm scared about the heat in Darwin!?

I live and have lived in Sydney all of my life. My partner would love to move to Darwin. I'd like it too, but one major reason I think I wouldn't actually move is the heat. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Have they done it? I can't stand the heat in Sydney let alone the heat all that extra way up North!!!!

I first moved to Darwin in 1977 before split system and car airconditioners were common place. In those days, the only cooling at home was ceiling fans and you drove to work with the car windows down. In the wet season you were drenched with sweat before you got to work!

I left Darwin after a few years and came back just over a year ago. Now all cars have airconditioning, all housing has split system airconditioning, shops, offices, etc, nearly everywhere you go now there is temperature control.

I often sleep in airconditioning (even with the verandah door slightly ajar) and live at home in an apartment where the fans and a sea breeze keep the air moving. If I get too hot I've got an aircon in the lounge. I go to work in an airconditioned car and work in airconditioned offices and shop in airconditioned supermarkets and shopping centres.

The heat is only a problem if you work outdoors. The heat in Sydney is much worse because of the pollution. That cloying suffocating heat is not like Darwin heat. Cool relief is never far away in Darwin, these days. Once upon a time you never saw a pale skin person in Darwin. Now they are the norm.

Its very different from the scorchers we get in Summer. The air is thick with the heat. When I first moved up (am back now) people talked about the heat so much that I didnt find it too bad because I think I overestimated it (like yourself). Its great though, I loved it.
If you have been to bali or thailand you will know about humidity, that is the kind of weather darwin has. Also get online every day and check the temp you will find its not that hot, Just different heat.

what do you prefer? these ugly, wet, 13 degree winter days.. or sunny days with short tropical showers in the afternoon and temps between 22-35?

Come to Cairns instead then ...

Darwin does not get as hot as Sydney but it is warm to hot all year. It does get humid in the wet season which can be uncomfortable but everything is air conditioned these days so it is not too bad. I spent two months in Darwin in March and April this year and am going back for the wet season starting in October. It is not intolerable and I prefer it to the very hot days get at home.

The Dry is beautiful - 32 degrees, but dry heat so it is great.

The Wet is a different story - you break into a sweat just blinking. The good news is that the place is designed to make this tolerable, either with good design or air conditioning and people adjust their lives to allow for the humidity.

I have no opinion on the heat, but I think love is swell.

There is no real Winter up there compared to Southern areas. We too have been thinking of relocating to an eternally warmer climate. I would not miss Winter one bit. Cold hurts.

And jobs go begging up there. I know of a lady who was obviously pregnant and she was offered work. The employer was happy for her to have leave to have her baby if it meant she was coming back.

You get temperature extremes in Sydney, 35 degrees one day, 12 the next. You don't get that up there. Its either warm or warmer. I can live with that. No more jumpers, no more uggies, swimming all year. yeah. :D
