Who funded Charles Darwin's expedition? Darwin was invited to sail on the Beagle as an unpaid Naturalist in 1838. Other shorter expeditions and research was funded by the Royal Geographic Society Probably the tax payers of Australia The Beagle was a Royal Naval surveying ship under the command of Lieutenant Robert FitzRoy. Its task was to survey the waters around South America, particularly the passages around Cape Horn and return via Australia. FitzRoy was able to take a companion so that he had someone of equal or equivalent rank to talk to on the voyage and chose Darwin when he applied for the position.
