Moving to Fort Collins, CO?

I am moving to fort collins in a few weeks, I drive a cts cadillac and have the stock tires on the car. Will I need to buy snow tires, or do you think I'll be fine as long as I dont go to the mountains?

On a CTS, I think your biggest problem is going to be that it's rear wheel drive. There's no real getting around that problem, but if it has traction control, that can help.

Don't get studded snow tires, but do get all-season radials. I think GM only makes them stock tires in colder climates -- in Texas, they probably give you "summer" tires which will give you no traction. All-season radials don't handle quiet as well as summer tires, but they don't have the studs on them that snow tires do.

You might invest in some tire chains, practice putting them on once, and throw them in the trunk incase you're ever stuck in a blizzard.

Other tips?

- A tiny amount of snow is far more dangerous than a large amount of snow. A small amount of snow can be like a thin layer of grease on a frying pan.

- If you start to skid, turn into the skid to regain traction.

- Remember that bridges and overpasses are usually icier.

- Pumping your brakes can help, even if you have ABS.

- You have a heavier car than most other drivers, so remember that they can probably stop quicker. Don't follow too closely.

- You might, when it first snows after you move, find a vacant parking lot and practice sliding around so you get familiar with how your vehicle behaves when it's snowy.

I live in Colorado and your car should do just fine. its been a very mild winter ...but yeah just stay out of the mountains!!

No, you don't need to buy new tires for your Caddy. I've lived here for 9 years and have only twice needed to use the all wheel drive on my truck. We're in the high plains desert, so we don't get much precipitation. When we do, it usually melts within a day or so.

Don't forget, your Caddy probably has traction control, also, so you should be fine. In the mountains, the plows are usually really good at clearing the roads. So long as you don't drive like an idiot, you'll have no problem at all. It's when someone drives too fast, regardless of vehicle, that they get in trouble.

BTW, I drive a lot - I'm a Realtor here. Also, I'm looking at getting a CTS for my next ride, as they're quite comfy.

People often say you don't need them here.

Those people tend to get stuck and have accidents, too. You don't absolutely need them, but life is a whole lot more pleasant if you have them.

4 of them, real snow tires (with a mountain and a snowflake on the sidewall). Makes life much less stressful, well worth the cost.
