After telling someone you used to live in Detroit, is it right for someone to exclaim: "You got out alive!"?

After telling someone you used to live in Detroit, is it right for someone to exclaim: "You got out alive!"?

Actually, Detroit has really cleaned up well.

No, it's kind of "shitty".......I hope u told him something back.

You gotta expect some people think that Detriot is a gangster type town

I live in wisconsin so except for milwaukee and madison there is really no gangs here at all, its just so diverse between the two cities

No, its not right at all, especially coming from some one who came from or lives in another metropolitan area.
If some one from Miami or LA was to reply to me after i said I'm from Detroit by saying "and you made it out alive" to me, i would come back with something like, "and your not an illegal immigrant" or some stereotype that's relevant to where ever they are from.

hell no its not right!

i find it to be very offensive.

i was never involved in any of that stuff

so why should i get crap for living in detroit?

its a beautiful city.

If u live in the city = yes/and no because you expect these remarks

if u live in the suburbs = no because you should have told them that you live in the suburbs, so why get mad when you've got a 5 bedroom home with a pool and garden in the backyard? be proud suburbanites, BE PROUD OF WHERE YOU COME FROM!!!

Is it right, no; is it expected, sure.

Detroit has a tough image. It is the way it is.

Detroit is sort of like those Geico cavemen ... those cavemen are convinced they're hip urban professionals, and are constantly frustrated by the simple fact that people think cavemen are brutes.

They then get more and more agitated by the notion that people think they're brutes that eventually they wig out and act like brutes.

Detroit is like those cavemen. We're brutes. Deal with it.

There's a lot of people that are proud that they live in Detroit, with it's gangster image. Most of the time when Detroit gets national coverage, it's about something bad, ie: 1967 race riots,1984 fan dies during world series celebration, Detroit burns during Halloween, ect....ect. Nationally Detroit rarely gets any positive coverage ( kind of like Iraq ), because bad news sells better.
I am a suburbanite,. but when I travel I do say I'm from Detroit, It's just easier to explain.
Also, I don't have a 5 bedroom house, with a pool.

People everywhere have this nasty stereotype about Detroit. I know when I had a friend from out of state come down to a Tigers game, she was surprised because she had a totally different image in her head of what it was going to be like. Its really no different than any big city.

i hate when ppl say that *rolls eyes*
i still live here tho..and i love it

It is horrible to say that! Although, it is not unlikely to hear. I live in Sterling Heights, MILES away from Detroit and the other day My dad was caught up in a drive by shooting.

Then also having detroit on the Oprah as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States, what else do you expect people to think!

Ha! Yeah....I get that all the time.

Well, usually I get...."aren't you glad that you don't live there anymore?" Then I surprise them with "NO....all my family is there, and I miss them." So that shuts them up!

I'm still in Michigan but very far from Detroit. I miss it though and go back for the the "big city" things.

Gotta love those Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers!!
Go BLUE Michigan games!
And all the great restaurants!
The zoo, Greenfield Village, The Detroit Institute of Arts.

I could go on and on of all the nice things in the city. Detroit has hosted conventions (Republican?), Super Bowls (2 that I know of), the All Star Game (a number of times) and numerous other big national events. There was nothing but positive comments about the city that has come from these events.

No, it is not right for someone to say that. And the reason being....100% of the people that say that to me have never been to Detroit! Ignorance is what I say it is!!

Whatever. you know you like it and think you derive some form of street cred from it. Most people are like that. Besides, what kind of clown exclaims that. That is so lame. You want respect, say you are from Kosovo or Darfur.

ha! I used to live in Detroit, I was a young white girl at the time give me a break

Chances are they can count on their right hand the number of times they've ever been to Detroit for anything, if at all. So no, uneducated comments are rarely "right."

That is no longer funny, if it ever was. That was 20-30 years ago. Times are different. GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!!

No that is like them moving to say washigton and saying you got out alive they dont even know what detroit id like i live in michigan but not in detroit i live in redford and michigan is a great city people dont need 2 talk trash about wheer you have came from they dont know how it is just because they have heard things that are not true thats almost races

People used to joke about Detroit being the "murder city" instead of the Motor City. Ha Ha...where's the humor in that?
