What do you know about Detroit, MI?

Would you move there

Detroit has the highest rate of depression in the U.S., the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases, one of the highest obesity rates and one of the highest suicide rates and one of the highest crime rates. In fairness, the study that gave it the highest crime rate in the nation last year was a little skewed and unbalanced. In any event, with a stellar reputation like this, I don't think anyone should live here. Since it probably hasn't made the national news, I'll tell you that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is personally doing his best to spread venereal disease from here to Las Vegas and from here to Washington D.C., and he's also contributing to depression, obesity and suicide. We live here because we can't sell our house and because our jobs are here. Our governor is just as bad as the mayor, so I would avoid Michigan entirely if I were you.

there was a recent survey that ranked it the #1 most miserable city in the US. Not sure if that's accurate, but it would keep me from living there.

I know a bit. I would've moved there because of my boyfriend, at the time.

Never in a million years would I move to Detroit in fact have lived in Michigan all my life and won't even go near the cess pool.... that's not to say the out lying areas are bad but I think the people of this state are TIRED of supporting Detroit through our hard earned tax dollars.......... Just wondering if there is a way to annex Detroit to Canada..... but they don't want it either....But one good thing is with all the houses in forecloser....... you can get some good deals in real estate.
Good LUCK

I already live here.

It's a very unique city.

And yet it made New York Times top 50 places to go for 2008. Detroit is much better than everyone says believes. I can't believe the stereotype of detroit being a "pit and terrible" city is still around. The people are nice, there's a great nightlife (during the summer), and it's truly an up and coming city. Detroit is my home and I love it!

The city no, the surrounding suburbs maybe. Nearby Oakland county is the 2nd richest county in America. Problem is the job market is really hurting around here. The city has potential, but because racism, incompetance, and corruption the city has seen better days. If you have a job offer, then I would say yes because housing prices are very cheap now. If you don't have a job lined up, I would look to other areas.

What i know and what others know can be found at http://www.visitdetroit.com. Please gain some FACT based knowledge for yourself and make the right decision for you. I am biased as I am born and raised here. Contrary to what some might think I am not depressed, can't wait to go to Belle Isle when the temp hits 60 and just got GOOD new job!

No place is perfect-it depends on what you need and what you like. You know you better than any of us. Do what is best for you!

I hope this helps you

To each his own!

I know a lot would I move there yeah, it is becoming a really nice city not quite there but it will be!! People just really don't know the truth about the city just only what they hear!!

I did move here from abroad. I have lived in many American and worldwide cities. Detroit has a ton of character, it might not be for everyone but it is perfect for a lot of us.

What i do know is Detroit is the victim of bad stereotypes.
It has its problems, but so does every city worldwide, yes the economy is in s slump at the moment.
But it is a city that is rich in good night life and culture with many surrounding areas that are very good places to live as well.
Detroit has allot of penitential and many folks fail to see or realize that, as well as give the city a chance and not be a blind follower of the American media
The only true flaw about Detroit is the bad economy which it has in common with the rest of Michigan, and the corrupt political staff that runs the city. Other than that Detroit is a much better place than what is portrayed it to be.
Honestly the only other places i would reside in is Chicago, new york and where i currently reside at in Mississippi because it currently has a strong economy that no one but a few know about, Detroit is my original home that i will eventually come back to one day.
All cities has their different flaws

I lived in Beirut during the '80s. Detroit is OK with me.

yes..because i love my city,if you are a weak minded person, afraid of every little thing, and dont like the cold....dont come

I wouldn't live anywhere else. No traffic, beautiful water views, great architecture and Greenfield Village. I have traveled to other cities and am always glad to be back here.
I lived in South St. Petersburg last year and was SO GLAD to be back in Detroit. It is so much safer. I dont care what anyone says I LOVE DETROIT.

Detroit itself, no way. As a teenager I wasn't even allowed to drive near there. But I live in a nice suburb 45 minutes from Detroit where there is no crime issue, no 'ghetto' area, not too many cars or factories smelling the place up.

The suburbs of Detroit can be really quite lovely.

HELL NO, the worst place in the USA to live and this is a fact...There were a copule of articles on how Detroit was the worst city to live in (high Crime Rate and High Unemployment Rate)...

they use to make cars there and they have real crummy sports teams
no i wouldnt move there
