Education in Ecuador? |
How many were sent to Ecuador thinking the education was better there than in the USA? I attended a high school in Guayaquil and was done in two years.... so I was 15 and a high school graduate... Overall, it is a fact that South American private education (elementary and High school level) is better than the average US public school. And there are several public schools (particularly in Chile) which are now offering IB courses for children. Schools are much more strict in terms of content in South America, the curriculum is much broader as many of the private schools are european based (British, French, Italian) and most of them offer PYP, MYP and IB levels. Ecuador is just an example of the kind of education schools are offering now. I am Ecuadorian. My mom is ecuadorian and she took us to Ecuador when we were 12. She put us in good schools in Quito and we learned the language very well. I graduated from the IB program. The education is very much more challenging. I was set back a year since At 6th grade I still didn't know a square root, when they had learned that in 5th grade. They don't see that until almost 7th here, in my days. So I was up for the challenge. I think schools here are very weak in their education and should demand more. I see my step daughter hardly do any homework. I was up till late trying to finish mine and I didn't get breaks for vacation. I would get more homework to keep my studies! I am Ecuadorian as well and I am a firm believer that high school education in the US is horrible. I lived in Ecuador until 6th grade and when I came here for middle school I was seeing things I had seen in 4th and 5th. The teachers there are A LOT more strict (2 hours of straight math and english) and yes you can't question anything they say but over here is the complete opposite. Kids in the US don't respect their teachers and do as they please. I have a couple of friends that are teachers and they regret choosing that profession because they say kids THREAT them with sexual harassment if they ask too much of them and unfortunately things have come to the point where parents no longer believe in the school but their kids. I went to an English speaking High School in Quito from 6th grade to graduation. When I arrived for 6th grade after having gone public US schools, I was behind. I had a rough time, but I caught up soon enough and when I went to university in the states I was bored with the ease of all the classes. |
