Full name is San Francisco de Quito. It is the Capital of Ecuador and sits on the line of 0 Latitude, so they have a monument proclaiming that it is the center of the earth (or something like that). (My husband is from Ecuador so I've seen numerous pictures.) It sits on the Andes mountain range and the altitude is quite high (about 10,000 feet). Visitors have to adapt to it and sometimes get sick at first. Even though it's on the equator, the altitude tempers the climate so it is not as hot as one might think. They don't have a lot of temperature extremes. It's a very pretty city, much cleaner and modern than other parts of the country.

It used to be part of the Inca Empire.

The currency used to be the "Sucre" but several years ago they adopted the U.S. dollar.

My family is from Quito, it is a pretty place, but one must take caution because there are the parts of the city that are very dangerous. The currency in Quito is the U.S. dollar, but it doesn't go very far in Quito. The city is surrounded by volcanoes and mountains. There is a part of Quito that is very colonial, and has alot of Spanish architexture. If you go to Quito try not to wear fancy clothes or anything like that, and don't say your from the U.S. cause who know's who's listening.
