Advice for stuff to do in Ecuador for the Holidays?

I'm visiting my friend in Ecuador for New Years for two weeks. I'm flying into Guayaquill and I will be staying mainly in Cuenca.

Go to the Galapagos. !!

I agree a trip to the Galapagos would be great. At that time of the year, the giant tortoises eggs start to hatch. It's also the warmer season.

The problem though is it may be difficult to get a reservation on short notice. I suspect most of the tour companies are already booked during this time period. The park carefully regulates how many people can visit.
