Would someone even vaguely familiar with New Zealand answer my question, I beseech you?

Is it true that there is a relative paucity of insects in New Zealand?

I'm not trying to be funny, my aunt told me this after returning from a Rugby tournament in which her husband played and assured us that there's very few insects. I find this hard to believe as my aunt is dumb as a lamp post.

It is true, there is a relative paucity of insects in New Zealand. I think it is due to the distinct seasons in New Zealand, as opposed to the lack of a true winter in most of Australia. Flies, in particular, seem to do better where there is never a hard freeze-

There are also few spiders No snakes and lots of birds ( possibly why there are less insects about)
