Being a Black male should I have anything to worry about when I travel to Berlin,Germany? |
I know that we live in a different time then when the nazi's had control, but I know that the old way of thinking still exist, so are there any places I should not go? is there anything I should look out for? As in every country Germany too has its share of racist idiots but not more than in the US.Generally you should be fine. If you go out in Berlin ask at the reception in your hotel what places you should avoid to go they will help you with that information.Berlin beeing a big city just keep your eyes open as in any other major city around the globe to avoid getting into trouble. I have a lot of family in Europe. Recently I was in Paris and London and there is an incredible amount of Africans in these cities. I immediately felt the ability to blend in and was not afraid at all. I have family in Austria and Germany and they seem very happy so I would say you really don't have anything to worry about. If you are white american, you have more to worry about than being a black american in my experience. Avoid Berlin - there are many Nazis in town: last weekend a pregnant woman and her 3- year old daughter from Vietnam were attacked by Nazis, a guy from Lebanon was attacked by Nazis, 2 gays were attacked by Nazis .... and nobody cares in Berlin. The mayor admits there are no go areas in town - but he "accepts" it. I avoid Berlin since I am Jewish - west Germany is fine to visit. I love Hamburg, I also like Cologne, Duesseldorf, Freiburg and Munich. Germany is fun - but not eastern Germany. You shouldn't worry about that. I'm from Germany and I was in Berlin twice and here in Germany aren't more people who have something against blacks then in other countries and even in the US. In my class there are 5 blacks, too and they haven't got any problems with any racists or so. Well, in West- Germany you will have even less problems than in East- Germany ( for example in Dresden) But here in West- Germany it is actually the same as in the US so you needn't worry. |
