Which neighbourhood in Glasgow Scotland is the safest place for a newcomer to live?

Which neighbourhood in Glasgow Scotland is the safest place for a newcomer to live?

I would say the West End of Glasgow would be the safest place to live.

Shawlands on the southside is ok. A lot of Hamilton Accies though.

West end. Near the park. Great western is pretty safe.

also to the guy above me....cumbernauld is so dodgy!

Avoid the East End. It's hard to be specific about other areas without knowing your budget.

The one attraction of Glasgow is the fact that you are not far away from beautiful surroundings. For example, Edinburgh is only 40 miles away and beautiful Argyll only two hours' drive.

It's all good. Even for a Blinkin' Londoner like me.
I have to agree that Shawlands is good, although West End is fab. I stay in Govanhill and that is lively and entertaining.

I would avoid the areas around Parkhead, Ibrox and Mount Florida/Kings Park because the regular influx of football supporters causes problems. Likewise, the City Centre can be noisy at night, so I would rule out the Merchant City and the Broomielaw. Personally I would avoid living in, or close to, the big schemes (Easterhouse, Garthamlock, Possil, Drumchapel, Pollok, Priesthill, Nitshill, Darnley, Castlemilk).

The West End is reasonably safe, although "infested" with University students. However, property is more expensive here. However, the Partick area of the West End is cheaper and it is a better neighbourhood than it looks at first glance. (The area has suffered long-term blight due to the Expressway and surrounding developments)

In the South Side, I would consider either Cathcart or Shawlands. Also look at Giffnock, Muirend or Netherlee if you do not mind being slightly further out.

You might also want to consider Ballieston in the east, Robroyston in the north or Yoker in the north east.

Glasgow is not a scary place Glaswegians are the salt of the earth city centre has been all cleaned up and it will cost you plenty to live near or in the city, best is to look round and see what you want and price?as when viewing property in Scotland you must disclose what your neighbourhood is like and your neighbours and if you get false information you can take them to court and get compensation do not worry what you hear Glasgow is OK and great in the city and around good luck

I live in Partick, moved here from Ireland 4 years ago and its really safe, close to transport links and local amenities! Around the West End is safe, also Shawlands is supposed to be a lovely place to live. I've even heard good things about parts of the East End such as Dennistoun. I'd avoid anywhere near high rises though! and places such as sighthill, possilpark, parts of Maryhill and i'm sure any Glaswegians would give u names of more places to avoid.. City Centre seems to be pretty safe too though avoid living anywhere on sauchiehall street if u want some quiet!!

The answer is: it depends who you are. Most of the professional middleclass live outside in their own little expensive ghettos. Glasgow is predominantly industrial working class who've been out of work for over a generation.Fine, there are good state benefits to claim without question and state money is thrown at Glasgow: they have the finest of sporting facilities.
However, if you are not one of them you will find their initial in-your-face friendship rapidly turns sour and to aggression. This might just be your manner of reaction, a non-Glaswegian voice, or even your innate politeness.
Catagorically Glasgow is a very difficult and hostile city.
In the evenings when the alcohol is downed beware! And at 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays just count the number of Police on the streets.

Glasgow is not any more unsafe than any other big city in the world. There are great people in ALL areas, there are a few bad people in all areas too.

People who expect fear will be scared. Just have an open mind.

In glasgow the safest place is the west end like partick, broomhill, jordanhill, hyndland, hillhead and kelvinbridge.
hope this helps

West end

Depends how close to the city centre you want to be . . . East Dunbartonshire was in Location, Location, Locations' toplist of desirable areas to live in. It still has a Glasgow postcode and is about 15 mins from city by car.
It is on the North / North West side of the city, with some nice rural areas mixed with suburban, good schools, facilities, etc.
If you have a job line up , worth checking out where it is based and looking for areas not too far travel wise.
If you are coming to study here, West End / Partick or South Side / Shawlands are the most "student" orientated areas.

The West End.
Don't think it's not safe because you're a newcomer though, there's people from all different nationalities, countries and sexualities all over Glasgow and the surrounding areas because of Scotlands great Universities. I'd suggest somewhere just outside of Glasgow in the Lanarkshire area.

Some areas NOT to live although believe me there are good and bad everywhere and as I am mentioning these it does not mean I class everyone who lives there the same.

Glasgow Housing Schemes such as Easterhouse, Drumchapel, Castlemilk, Barlanark.

Areas - Carntyne,Shettleson, Govan, Possil Park to name a few to be avoided.

East Kilbride is a new town, still comes under Glasgow though. It has a vast number of houses, some quite ordinary, some luxurious. It has a vast shopping centre and appeals to lots of people. It would depend if you like'new towns' as the shops are all more or less in one central area. Thought I would mention this as nobody else has.

Must add Glasgow has the same problems as any large city but on the whole it a wonderful city for clubs, sports facilities, parks, theatres, clubs, museums, restaurants/bars, shopping. to name but a few things.
It also has some wonderful architecture and history attached to it. At present we still have the famous Glasgow Barras (sort of open market) where you will hear the famous Glesca patter, however keep tight hold of your purse/wallet around there. The people of Glasgow are known as the most friendly in the world There is the usual bit of agro between Edinburgh and Glasgow but unlike the person who answered you earlier, referring not to go anywhere with a G postcode, meaning you should go to Edinburgh. I would unlike him not bring down his city, Edinburgh too is a beautiful city well worth visiting.

Probably York, that's as in Yorkshire.

none at all

Cumbernauld...without a doubt.

None if you are English.

a safe area in glasgow mmm let me think ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha good one ha ha ha ha ha

Edinburgh 44 miles away. Avoid any area with a postcode starting with a G.
