Is it true that Tasmania was originally independent and actually gave it up?

I mean, what for? It's completely different from Australia - lush and green and mountainous. They should have satyed inie if you ask me. Why'd they do it? It's almost like a kind of suicide.

Most of the responses are technically correct.

We have no regrets federating with the other states was our economic saviour (the claim of major oil reserves is wrong), we still have our special place in the world

It had to do with finances and the similar English colony culture so they decided it would be best to sacrifice their island beauty for factories

Until Federation, in 1901, each of the Australian colonies was independent of the others. The different colonies became the states.

They still are, technicallly. The Constitution of 1861 is still in effect. Their engagement with the Australian federation is purely voluntary and they may withdraw at any time. It does ssem surpizingly they would have joined, particularly considering the success of new Zealand as an independent nation. newfoundland was an independent country until 1934,although their provincial status was not actually ratified until 1948. Now they've found oil so they are really regretting having relinquished their automonomy. Texans are not without regrets also.

It could have been worse. In 1940 it was offered to a consortium of jewish organizations as a possible site for jewish resettlement leading ultimately to a jewish state-within-a-state. It's much too beautiful for that.
