My husband and 2 kids 1 3 yrs 1 9 months are thinking of moving from sydney to tasmania in 2009.?

my husband is a teacher and I am not working. We really would love to hear from any one in similar circumstances to tell us all the good and bad we should consider before taking the plunge!

My experience is moving to Hobart so my response will be based around that. Hobart has around 200,000 out of a total state population of 500,000 and has the best level of services, employment opportunities and schools.

I'll start with some negatives (but not too bad), employment is harder to get and there is not the variety of jobs or pay scales, the climate is cooler so it may not be the best place for those who feel the cold, there is less choice in shopping, restaurants etc., some things like cars are more expensive.

On the plus - it's a fantastic lifestyle here, housing is so much cheaper than Sydney and nearly everybody has a views of the river, mountain or both, peak hour lasts less than 10 minutes and you can get around the inner suburbs within 15 minutes. Lots for fresh food is fresher and cheaper and home vege gardens are the norm, the city is safer (though not without some social problems). All in all I'm very happy to have made the move.

Flights to Sydney are quite resonably priced and there are more young families here than where I lived in Sydney Report It

Housing here in Hobart is much less right now than in Sydney. Tasmania and especially Hobart is just beautiful. It isn't as warm as Sydney, but we have some beautiful areas. We don't have as much shopping or variety as Sydney, but if you want a more laid back lifestyle, Tassie is the place to be. It is a great safe place to raise kids. I love it here and I have been here almost three years now.

EDIT: juvy -- Tasmania is a state in Australia and Sydney is a city in New South Wales Australia. You need an up to date course in geography -- you mean well though.

its also nice to move in other places to experience new things, i guess your family can cope with the new life in other country, just believe in yourself and you both can make it!

I have lived in tassie a number of times as my husband is Tasmanian, it is a beautiful place, very cold in the winter, but the summers are glorious
