Hi im going on a volunteer trip to kenya in july staying in Nairobi and Maasai Mara is it safe there? by then?

It's impossible to say right now - there is alot of political turmoil going on about the recent elections. Most of the violence seems to be directed towards the different political factions (which are generally split along tribal lines). Unfortunately, much of the turmoil is happening in Nairobi and Mombasa.

You can check with the State Department, if you are in the US - if not in the US then I'm sure your country has a similar department. The State Dept. puts out weekly alerts that are designed to help US citizens decide whether it is safe or unsafe to travel in a certain area.

I hope things settle down soon and you are able to go there safely - it really is a very interesting and wonderful country.

Good luck!

you are so lucky that yuo have a trip to kenya, i am a kenyan citizen but i live in canada by the way please visit masai mara it is having lotz of wild animal lucky man .what if i also want to go for the volunteer trip please contact (salim_raghav@hotmail.com)

if only CNN could show the true picture. they exxagerate too much.i live in kenya close to nairobi and we don't seem to have any problem.with the current talks going on , we hope everything will be back to normal[not that it is bad].KARIBU.

I lived in Kenya up until June of last year and have lived there off and on for the past 6 years. I think that the western media has VASTLY overplayed what's happening in the country and that you should have absolutely NO problem visiting Kenya and going to the Mara for safari.

I still have many friends in Nairobi I communicate with regularly, and they all report that unless you live in certain slums in the city, everything has returned to normal, except that there are more bar night fundraisers and art event fundraisers and things like that to help out the displaced people.

Kofi Annan also said today that he thinks that a power-sharing agreement will happen soon, which should basically end the violence that does remain.

In short, yes, you should be safe.

I have just come back from Volunteering in Kenya and Tanzania. Unfortunately, i must admit that the level of hostility and anger is very obvious in Kenya (in comparison to tanzania). I felt uneasy at all times in Kenya, which detracted from the experience a lot. It is normal to be hassled on the streets in Africa by street vendors and others wanting to make some money from you - but in Kenya it often flared into a very angry situation if you said you were not interested in purchasing an item. On one occasion, our 4wd (belonging to the orphanage) was pushed over onto it's side by some disgruntled locals. There is so much to do in Africa by way of volunteering.... if i were to go again, i would not spend the time in Kenya.

Hi i work and live in Nairobi and i can assure you that its safe.Maasai mara is in southern part of Rift Valley and there is no cases of violence.Karibu kenya hakuna Matata.

July is in five months time. nobody knows what the situation will be then. The position now, is that talks headed by Kofi Annan are ongoing. Its calm right now but lets not confuse calm with peace. We still do not have the peace we have always known. Annan said a deal is not a deal until it has been signed. Right now, nothing has been signed but we are hoping for the best come next week. maybe by July, all this will be behind us, maybe not. My advice, keep yourself up to date with info. from kenya and dont trust the international media too much, most times they are one sided. After all they are after the ratings
