Carcassonne, first week in August for three days - yes or no and why?

About the date : early August may be very hot in Carcassonne ( over 30掳C / 86掳F), and air conditionning is not frequent in cheap or mid range hotels. Visiting the city or the countryside with hot weather may be very painfull and you'll keep a poor feeling of this nice area. (a couple of hours in one of the public swimming pools may compensate). If you go walking in the countryside , take enough water with you (At least 1.5 litre per person/day) .There are a few vipers (snakes) , but just stay on the path and watch where you put your feet. At the end of several hot days, you may also have a thunderstorm.
About the area : of course you can visit the city itself ( one day).
You may also have a walk in the "montagne d'Allaric" (the 600m high hill/mountain South East ) which can take 1/2 to 1 day (read cautions about hot weather above). The old castle of Allaric ( Allaric was the King Wisigoth around 5th century ) is hardly joignable by walking in the bushes .
If it is hot, you may drive to Saint Ferreol, North direction- going through Revel. It is a nice lake in the "Montagne Noire", where you can swim . The landscape in Saint Ferreol is very different from the Carcassone area ( Mountain type instead of Mediterranean).
You may drive to Limoux and enjoy the local sparkling wine. Around Limoux, you have Esperaza where there are rests of dinosaurs ( nice museum, and children can exercize themselves to search dinos).
East, you may drive to Abbaye de Fontfroide , wonderfull 12th century cistercian abbey. Becarefull the highway (toll) is overloaded Friday evening, saturday moring and sunday evenings. Route nationale is much better and you can enjoy the view.In the east direction you may go to the seaside, although I personnaly do not like this area of the seaside (dusty & windy , ugly buildings of the 60's-70's, too crowdy in summer, smelling oil and chips ).
The old villages in the "Corbieres" ( Mountains at the south east) or Minervois ( Mountain at the North East) are worth visiting.
As a conclusion, I would recommend spending a few days in this area. But I personnally do not like hot weather, so I would recommend visiting it in spring or automn. But is is a personnal view.

Yes, because the walled city is well worth a visit and there is good wine in the region to go with the rich food.

But, no, maybe not in August. A bit hot.

Carcassonne is one of the most wonderful town in France !
Don't miss "la cit茅 m茅dievale", "le canal du midi" and the visit of the vineyards !!!!
