What is the pool in liverpool and blackpool?

The 'pool' in Liverpool was the natural harbour for small ships which attracted settlers to the banks of the river. It has long ago disappeared beneath the streets as the town, and then city, grew.

The 'pool' in Blackpool comes from 'poole' a local term for a stream. The stream there ran through a peat bog thus the water was turned black, thus 'black poole' became 'Blackpool.
