Snow Near L.A. (To Play, Not Ski)?

I'd like to take my two small kids to play in the snow, but have no need to fight the crowds at a ski resort - we would just fool around in the snow and maybe sled if there was an appropriate hill. Any suggestions? We live near Santa Monica, and would like to stay within a 90 minute drive if possible.

If you go on weekends, there are a lot of people who like to do the same thing. There are only a limited number of places to get to the snow:

-Angeles Crest Highway (highway 2). Take the 210 to highway 2 in La Canada, then go north past Newcomb's Ranch to get to the snow.

-Take I-5 north to Frasier Park.

-Take the 10, 60, or 210 east to the 215 north, then follow the signs to Lake Arrowhead or Running Springs. Even though this may be a bit crowded, you have the best chance of getting some good sledding. If you go to Big Bear, there's a place called Magic Mountain/Alpine Slide where you can slide down hills on inner tubes.

Angeles National Forest. You take the 2N (Glendale Fwy) all the way north into the mountains above La Canada/ La Crescenta.
