Front doors that swing 鈥渙utwards鈥?(rather than 鈥渋nwards鈥?.?

In Florida, noticed that in a lot of the older motels and houses, the front door swings out (rather than swinging in).

Is there a practical reason for this?

In Florida, even the doors of our houses are required to open outward by building codes. It to help protect from hurricane force winds blowing the doors in. The reason for doors opening inward up north is also a building code. It's so you can dig your frozen butt out when there is snow piled up against the door.

so the door will not hit you

My door swings in. I thought it would be more prctical swinging in.

I have been told that it is done
for security reasons. It is more difficult
to force the door inwards against the jamb.

Many cities across the nation have strict building codes, especially after the 1942 Coconut Grove fire in Boston. There was a nightclub fire where there was only one revolving door as means of exit - and it jammed. 492 people died trying to escape.

As a result, many cities have strict codes that include : revolving doors that are the only entry/exit point MUST have outward swinging manual doors on each side, emergency exits may only be outward swinging hinged doors, sliding doors do not count as exits. Most buildings have more specific requirements depending on the number of people the building holds.

Maybe in Florida, older buildings had to update their doors because there aren't as many entrances and exits as larger, more modern buildings with many emergency exits. In large , more modern buildings the front door can be sliding, revolving or a combination with side doors that open in/out as long as there are clearly marked "emergency" exits.

safety reason,in case of "Elvis" want to leave the building
