I second the Flying Pig...I stayed at the Uptown location and it was ridiculous fun...although I thought the shrooms were great too =)
But yeah, the prices are decent, the location's great, right next to Vondelpark, the people are a blast, and they have a fun bar too. I'd definitely stay there the next time I go. I believe the Downtown location's a lot of fun too, I went in for a few minutes and it seemed nice, but I think the Uptown's supposed to be more fun.

The FLYING PIG! Has a bar and everything you need. Great people as well. Just stay away from the shrooms out there. Beyond potent.

I swear by St Christopher's Inn. It is on Warmostraat, an alley right out of 19th century.....lots of character and lots of 'curious' shops....if u get my drift. But the place is very safe, I was a single girl travelling alone.....never faced any difficulty...they have a bar......a patch of open area for sit out dinners. They have internet access, free and good breakfast, near the central station, in fact walking distance.....and yes....it is in the Red Light district. Right behind the hostel is the Oude Church...a beautiful church with stained glass and wooden ceiling where Saskia, Rembrandt's wife is buried.....around the church are the Windows......where there are live beauties showcased. Very easy to navigate the city if you stay there. Also near one of the historic canals.....a good value for money......65 to 75 euros for 3 days in a girls dorm with breakfast was a steal. Just carry small locks for keeping your stuff safe in the bunk locker.
