I am planning a trip to Amsterdam in March. Things to see? any suggestions? ideas?

I want to see as much as I can and not entirely follow some guide book - so that's why I ask the ones that live or have been there what to do and where to go to benefit as much possible from my visit to Amsterdam.

The best site I know about Amsterdam is this:
http://www.amsterdam.info/
Just follow the words you are interested in, clicking on music will take you to the page about all kinds of music, from clasical to clubs.

I think the page with museums is the best, as Amsterdam has many museums, about the most odd things, like handbags and glasses as well as the more known Art and Culture like things.

Walk around in the city.
I would say that a walk though the oldest part of the city is a must, (most of it is now red light district,) but also walk a bit along the canals in the ring, that is the edge of the old city.
Visit a museum or two, have a drink in a corner cafe, (on many corners of Amsterdam you will find them, traditional Dutch, the places the locals go for their beer,) they also serve nice hot chocolate with a dash of something alcoholic if you want that. Very nice to get warm again.
Shopping is spread over a big part of the town.

Dinner at an Indonesean Chinese Restaurant, get a rice table, a buffet style dinner with many dishes.
If you are a small eater, pancakes may be the thing for you.
Traditionally sandwiches are the thing the Dutch eat for lunch when in town, there are still many places where the still make them with whatever you want to have on them.

This site also has a map of Amsterdam, where you can search on address or name of whatever you want to see or do:
http://www.amsterdam.info/map/

If you can ride a bike you can rent one, or go on a bike tour, but even though I ride a bike every day, in Amsterdam I use the tram.

Get the book "Eyewitness Travel Guide" for Holland. It is awesome. Oh, and look for us! My husband and I are going the end of March/early April for 10 days. We are doing a tour of the forts, windmills and such. The Eyewitness Travel Guide has a lot of really cool other things to see too.

Just snagged this web page from another question about Amsterdam.

See you in Amsterdam!!!!

you will find a lot to do in Amsterdam there are a number of Museums etc there is the Zoo a short way outside is Madoradam which is Holland in miniature if you go a bit farther a field you will find a lot to do in Holland generally try Arnhem Rotterdam Utrecht groinigen just to mention a few places you will find that Holland has a very good Public transport system and almost every one speaks English

Amsterdam city is well known for its bicycle-friendly cities in the world. From reports, Amsterdam today has more than 700,000 bikes in the city (while some reported as 600,000 bikes). Due to this fact, there are numerous operators around that provide rental services. You can hire one of them for about 鈧?.5 - 鈧? per day while some multi-day rates are as low as 鈧?. Cycling in the city of Amsterdam is fun, enjoyable and refreshing.

With the cycle, you can travel south and visit a riverside village called Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. This scenic landscapes and waterscapes is a popular destination for cyclists and boating enthusiasts. This is the oldest village in the Amstelland region dated back to 12th century with windmills and wooden-shoe factories. There is a century-old family Out Bakery offering a host of confections made from recipes as old as the bakery itself. You can have your tea beak here

I guess it will be exciting and fun for you to cycle around Amsterdam city and explore the city.

See if this website can give you any other help.
