I am going to Amsterdam for 5 days and I was planning on bringing me with a $1000 USD. In EUR that is roughly around $674. Will that be enough for my whole stay there? I'm leaving on the 5th day. Maybe I would be spending my time eating there than buying things and visit museums and etc. I was in amsterdam for three days last week. Here are a few prices of average things which I encountered.
Taxi from Airport to Dam Square = 55.00 euro
Train and tram will take you the same distance for 5.00 euro in 40 mins.
Large beer, which is just over a pint in most bars would be approx 5.00 -5.60
Pack of Cigarettes = 4.00
Bar food / Nice Eatery:
Sandwich 4-7.00 euro
Bowl of soup 5.00 euro
Main Course (Not Steak) 16 - 20.00 euro
McDonalds (Same as the states) We have the Euro menu like ye have the Dollar menu.
Trams throughout amsterdam 1.60 euro
Anne Frank house 7.50 entrance (Worth seeing!)
Accommodation is reasonably priced. we paid on average of 35.00 per night. Do not expect huge rooms either. Most of the hotels are in the preserved canal buildings of Amsterdam and have staircases that are so vertical they look like ladders. I found the locals there very pleasant so ask questions if need be.
Do not entertain guys in certain area's who call you or try to attract your attention, totally ignore them like the locals do. If they hear you are not local some of them try to sell you crap!
WATCH OUT FOR THE BIKES THOUGH! its like Beijing. Very easy way to travel around it because Holland is so flat. Enjoy your trip Sounds reasonable. Depends on how frugal you want to be. It's been a while since I was there. You'll want to check on hotel costs. Night life can get pricey, so if you're going to party every night, you may need a little more.
During the day, be sure to visit the Anne Frank house - it's awesome! Don't miss it.
A travel book can help you estimate costs for room, dining, museums, and nightlife. "Let's blow through Europe" is jovial and focused on keeping expenses down.
Tips:
Do not wander into alleys in Amsterdam at night.
Check the rules at the hotel before you check in.
Grab a matchbook from the hotel (in case you get a driver who doesn't speak English).
Carry traveler's checks and keep the cash down. Keep a copy of the check #'s in a different location (so you can replace them). Do not bother with traveler checks when you come to the Netherlands, they used to be popular but that was a long time ago.
Take a bank card that works in the ATMs, check with your bank that it is ready and what each use will cost.
Also take a credit card (if only for emergencies) if you have one.
You will have a big over 130 Euro per day, that should be enough if you are careful. Search till you have a hotel or hostel that is cheap (enough) and think before you spend money, but if you do not spend a lot on drinking and smoking you must have enough money.
For things to do, there are loads of museums, buildings worth visiting, canals to walk along, (or cruise over,) nice and not too expensive places to eat and shops to visit without spending a fortune.
This site is helpful finding them:

The map on this site also has a search function, so you can find where the things are too.

I often eat in the small (and moderate pricewise,) places on Zeedijk, between Nieuwmarkt and the central station.
You can also fill your stomach in the Dutch fast food chain (if you can call them that) Febo, chips and meat products.
Pizza to go, Shoarma (different spellings possible) kebab, and several other things are real cheap.
Indonesean Chinese restaurants are mostly moderate in price too, rice table is adviced but not always the cheapest, but with any place to eat, check the menu on the door or the window next to it, you will find many people doing that.
On your last night in town you can eat a fancy dinner if you have money left.
If you go to the site linked to above you can click on museums, you get a short description and click on its name and you get a long decription and in it is the price of the place. You will find several that are well within your budget.
And while you are in a museum you will not spend money in a shop.
Only go to Anne Franks house if you have read the book or really want to go, there are many other places to visit if you are in doubt.
Souvenirs can wait till the last day, so you will not spend your needed money on it, but I am sure you will have some money left to buy them. |
