Can anyone recommend me some good hostels in Amsterdam?

I don't know if that's possible but it would be great if it was not too far from the center and not too expensive (as cheap as possible:)

Just stayed at the Inner Amsterdam Hostel at the end of January '08. Very clean, beds changed daily & you get a towel each day. An all you can eat (simple but good) breakfast & juice each morning is included in the price.

It was located next to the Van Gogh museum & close to the city centre. Booked ir through Hostelbookers.com & it cost around 13GBP (about 17euros) per night when sharing an 8 person dorm. More expensive for private rooms.
Excellent value.

The Amstel Botel. It's almost as cheap as a hostel and better. The rooms are small, but it's cool to stay on a boat (nice view). You're within walking distance to the redlight, but not in it. I spent 8 days there and it was very reasonable.

Edit - Keep reading below. It seems that the Botel may have moved.

The bulldog hostel.
I just came back from staying there with 8 people and i recommend it 100%. It is very cheap, in the centre of the city.
Staff are lovely and security is very good.

Check it out.

A note to dixie_down_under's answer:
They moved the Botel, it is now well away from the city center.
From its old spot you need to walk through the railway station, behind the station you catch a ferry and from the other end of the ferry you need to walk some more.

There are many cheap hotels in Amsterdam but I live close enough not to need them. Sorry not to be of any help.
