Holland Or Netherlands?

Well what officially is it? and why does it have two names?

The Netherlands are divided into twelve provinces, two of which are Noord (North) Holland and Zuid (South) Holland. The others are Drenthe, Flevoland, Frisia, Gelderland, Groningen, Limburg, Noord Brabant, Overijssel, Utrecht, and Zealand.

Noord and Zuid Holland are just the areas with the biggest cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague, etc., and are the areas nearest to England so were the best known areas to English speakers in the Middle Ages. It's like people mistakenly calling the UK "England".

Its officially the Netherlands !! :)

Officially it's the Netherlands. Holland is just a region of the Netherlands. But I don't think the Dutch are that uptight about what you call it.

netherlands

They are also know as part of the Benelux area as well

The Netherlands is the official name of the constitutional monarchy, located in Western Europe. Holland is a region in the central-western part of the Netherlands. The Netherlands is often called Holland, which is formally incorrect as North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces. Please relate to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands...

Netherlands, but for some reason Netherland products like to label themselves Holland in the US

It rolls off the tongue more smoothly. And while many people would give me the stinkeye over this, it is true: the majority of the Dutch live in North- or South-Holland (it's a lot more urbanized than the rest of the country).

But it IS only a part of the Netherlands (in Dutch: Nederland, singular).

officially it's the netherlands, but since most foreighners know it as holland we say Holland more often to tourists, loads of people don't even know what or where the netherlands is/are LOL

we don't really care what you call it

Definitely "The Netherlands", Holland is, as already stated, wrong (since North and South Holland are two separate provinces it doesn't even exist as an entity nowadays and even when it did it didn't include the Northern part of North Holland) and for people outside of Holland the use of that name to refer to our country is outright insulting. In fact when people ask me if I'm from Holland my usual answer is a straightforward "NO". I'm from The Netherlands but do not wish to have anything whatsoever to do with Holland.

edit: O, Salkafar to my knowledge 37% is not a majority. And about the statement that The Netherlands would have two capitals, that is nonsense, Amsterdam is the capital. Though it is right that our government is situated in The Hague the constitution is very clear on Amsterdams status as capital.

netherlands (lowerland)

it also has two capitals, the hague and amsterdam
