Where are the best places to shop and sightsee in New York in one week? |
Where are the best places to shop and sightsee in New York in one week? You must include, the Empire State building and the Statue of Liberty of course. Then go the Central Park ( ice skating in the winter) and also visit the Met Museum and the Guggenheim while you are up that end . FAO Swartz toy shop is at the entrance to Central Park and worth a walk round. Times Square in the evening is brilliant - plenty of cafe and restaurants if you get hungry - and Toys R US store for the kids - and book a show on Broadway by getting cheap tickets at the kiosk while you are there and get yourself on the webcam out side TFI Fridays electronic shop ( see NYC Earthcam site) . Shopping on 5th Avenue during the day may be fun for you too - if you want all the big names like Tiffanys - but don't take your credit card!!. A visit to China town and Greenwich village as well as Little Italy are also good place to shop and enjoy the scene and are free as well - and finish off with a walk through Grand Central Station , then past the UN buildings and over to ground zero at the Twin Towers site - use the subway to get around - but only during the day much faster than taxis. It would be impossible to see it all in New York in one week because everything is so interesting and exciting. I was in N. Y. two years ago. Couldn't see much but enjoyed in everything. Have a good time! Empire State Building (just a tall building) but be prepared to queue and be searched don't bother paying the extra to go all the way to the top deck cos there's nothing there. Try to go up when it's light and stay till it gets dark . The only good views are overlooking the city itself. Statue of Liberty (not a very tall statue) again, be prepared to queue and be thoroughly searched. If you want to go into the base of the statue (your'e not allowed up into the statue anymore) then you will have to book as they only allow so many people in a day. Nothing to do when you get there except walk round it. There is a rather grotty fast food place to get something to eat but don't sit outside cos you get buzzed by the seagulls. There is also a gift shop, of course. On the return trip you can stop off at Ellis Island if you are into America's brief history. Times Square, isn't a square at all it's just a junction where three roads meet so its more of a Times Triangle but it does boast a giant 'steaming' Pot Noodle. Madison Square Gardens is well worth a visit to watch a basketball match. Don't buy tickets from touts outside as they are fakes. Best to buy them online before you go. It really is enjoyable and you get caught up in the atmosphere whether you like basketball or not. A walk through Central Park is just a walk to say you've been and done it. Walk towards the Rockerfella Centre end of the park as the other end is a bit grotty. Ice Skating at the Rockerfella Centre. Shopping. My son found so many Footlockers he was in heaven. Macey's and Bloomingdales, you can wander round forever if you are so inclined. Sacs Fifth Avenue if you want to see crazy prices. Loads of museums and art galleries. Don't bother with the helicopter trips as you only fly up and down the river ( since 9/11 you can't fly over the city or the statue) and, unless you have a good seat your view will be restricted. There are no public toilets in New York so unless you are cheeky like me and just use resteraunt and bar facilities be prepared to have to buy drinks, snacks. Sorry if I don't make it sound exciting but I really thought it was all a bit of a let down. The Americans know how to sell and we buy into it. All in all it's just a city and not a very pretty one. Empire State, then the Rockerfeller centre. If you do a cost / time breakdown on this ... it all depends upon what *you* want. Those will be the best things to do I went last year in Feb with my wife and had a blast. |
