Newcastle was once known as the city and county of newcastle upon tyne Does it still have county status?

I remember seeing the signs as i approached newcastle saying the county and city of newcastle upon tyne But now they only say city What happened

the toon was awarded county corporate status in 14th century which meant it was its own county with in a county.
The welcome to Newcastle upon Tyne signs on the approaches to the city used to say welcome to the city and county of newcastle upon tyne.
on stamfordham road next to the black swine the sign still read like that in 1979
Now the boundaries have extended the new signs dont mention county

This all started when the north east county boundaries began changing in the late 1960's. After they'd finished shuffling with county and parish boundaries, they realised that whilst they had "Tyne & Wear" and "County Durham" etc., they had nothing to specify "Newcastle", but "Newcastle".

If you look carefully at boundary maps in the local library, you will notice that the boundary line for Newcastle, as a county, is still there, but there is no name for the county. This decision was taken by Newcastle council in their infinite wisdom for prevention of duplication and confusion: otherwise, letter addressing would have read -

Sue Smith
XX Ryders Grove
Heaton
Newcastle
Newcastle
NE?! *RD

They also decided that it was surplus to requirements as Newcastle is a city in its' own right, and therefore doesn't really need a "county".

This discussion on city and county remained high on the council agenda up until the early '80's until (we assume) a decision was made. The area marker you see would have been considered correct at the time; newer ones show "City" only.

Well, as long as they don't start shuffling the boundaries again anytime soon....!
