Can anyone give me an honest answer to how many creepy crawlies i will see in Perth Australia?

We are thinking of emigrating to Perth Australia but th
e only thing putting us off is the snakes and spiders. How
likely are we to run into theseb creatures

Take no notice of the idiots. I lived in Perth for two years and only ever saw cockroaches. Okay, my husband killed one redback spider but that was out by the garbage, where they are very likely to lurk. You can get your home, inside and out, sprayed for cockroaches and spiders.

As for snakes, they are unlikely to come into urban areas, although it is possible. We never saw one in Perth or in Sydney, where we lived for three years afterwards. Don't let your fears put you off living in the best country in the world!

no more than 2.

very

Hmm. Unless your in the outback the only thing you will probably see is a spider, bigger than the average size. However, i was in a city and there was a snake down at the lake. There are alot of small creep crawlys but they tend to be more scared of you. I say the only thing you will see while your away (if your not intending to go to a zoo) is a spider - if your lucky!

Have fun :)

I lived in Perth for 4 years before moving to Sydney, in which time I never saw anything dangerous or menacing at all.
Australians love to to scare foreigners with tales of deadly creatures. The reality is that most have rarely ever seen them except in Zoos. 85% of Aussies live in cities where most of these animals don't like to live - especially snakes (which live in the deserts). The one deadly animal you might come across is the Funnel Web spider - and then only in the greater Sydney area after heavy rainfull.

I have seen the odd red-backed spider (like a black widow spider) in the outhouse at my Grandmothers farm in country Western Australia but they don't usually attack - just ignore them and they leave you alone. In fact that's the advice you should take with all Australian wildlife. If it moves then leave it the heck alone. Call wildlife rescue if it looks furry and cute but injured.

The most dangerous creatures in West Australia reside on Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth, where you will find gangs of Quokkas in Womble camouflage mugging the visiting tourists for anything remotely edible. My elder brother barely survived a visit to the remote western end of the island where he and his family found themselves surrounded by a mob of Quokkas demanding all his worldly goods (his picnic basket). These are unrelated to the deadly drop bears (aka venomous spitting Koala) often found in gum trees in public parks (particularly Kings Park - Perth).

As far as moving to Perth - the dangers are not a little over-exagerated, you won't have any problems.

As there are lots of cats in Perths suburbs,
they seem to eat most things that move.
There are a few creepy crawlies, but you don't see them too often.when you do they are usually scampering away to hide from humans. Not too many snakes either.
Perth is by far the most beautiful city in the world.Certainly in Australia.
Go and start a new life in the peace and tranquillity of a civilised city and country.
I shall be going back soon. I can't wait to get away from the madness that is now England..
Somewhere I don't recognise anymore.
Go and enjoy it ....

Been on visits to various parts of Oz 3 times and didn't see a red back nor any snakes

Unless you actively look for them, you'll probably not see
many, they tend to keep out of your way, they don't go looking for you, and you will soon get used to the odd natural precautions to take. It's a fantastic country go and enjoy it.

my friend emigrated to Oz, and she got some advice from the Australian office prior to going (i thnk you can also buy them on the net)and they sent her laminated cards on snakes and spiders that they were likely to come across, it showed what they look like, what they do and what to do if you are bitten. scary at first , she has them put on her fridge so she knows what to do, she is in the wine region so she does get alot of huntsman spiders, but she just sprays them! we met other people who do the same and they sell sprays in all the supermarkets (and kills them!) or she gets a card and glass if they are not too big and put them outside, she has only seen 1 snake in the 3 years she has been there and then it was more scared of her and moved away quickly. i would say if you are in a city then your chance of seeing them is less than if you are in the countryside.

Also remember that compared to how many people there are in Oz including vistiors they have about 100 or so deaths from spiders a year!

I would not let this put you off - it is FANTASTIC and i am so envious!!!!

Good luck xxxxxxx

snakes - very unlikely. Unless you live in the bush you wont see any. In the bush you may seee one or two a year. So they arent commonly seen

Spiders - NO big problem with them. you can get daddy long legs in your house they are common, but do no harm to you. Redbacks, you may see a few, so watch out. But mainly if you keep your house clean, you wont see many. Just make sure you vacuum them up.

There is no real 'problem' with snakes and spiders in Perth.

I was born and raised in Perth and it is a great city for families and kids to grow up.

As for the creepy crawlies I wouldn't worry too much as most of the insects are harmless. More annoying than anything else especially the bloody flies which are very persistant and don't shoo very easily.

As for the dangerous types there are only really a few to worry about and they can be easily avoided.
The first is the Red Back spider, this is very similar to the Black widow. these like cool dark places lo live. This means places like under beches in the garage or shed, in corners of dark rooms and in cupboards that are not used very often. Yes you will probably see them but if you leave them alone they will not come anywhere near you. The biggest threat from these is when you get your garden furniture out after winter. This was how my mother was bitten by one. Yes she did become unwell but she did not die from it. She just went to the local GP and they gave her tablets for it.

The next one is a Whitetailed Spider, these are not very common but they don't make a web but wander freely around but chances are that you will never see one. These also like dark areas away from people. Just be sure to shake out your shoes before putting them on.

On the snake front there are only really two that you need to worry about
First is the Dugite, these are browny grey snakes that can grow up to 2 metres. I have never seen one tis big though. They are poisonous but they have small rear set fangs so they are unable to bite through shoes. The best way to avoid these snakes is to not go into thier habitate, they will avoid you. The most likely time you will see them is on a path sunning themselves if you walk through a Park with bush in it. Or over on Rottnest there are a few.
Also don't go picking up logs or rocks as they like to live under these.
The other snake is the Tiger snake. This is not seen very often and in all my years I have never seen one. They like living near water.
Saying this these snakes are very rare to find in the suburbs of Perth and you will probably never see one unless you get out of the city.

The most dangerous animal is the bloody Kangaroo as they have a habit of standing on the road around sunrise and sunset and they cause a lot of dammage to your car when you hit one. Thats why we invented (us Aussies) the Roo bar.
These you won't see in the suburbs though.

I would'nt worry about the local wildlife there. I lived there for 15 years and loved every minute. Its a wonderful city and the country side is well worth a visit on a regular basis. There are flora and fauna everywhere in Oz but you'd be pushed to see much of it in the city. You have to look hard for snakes, as they are elusive.Spiders are about but not in great quantities. Just enjoy and relax and let Perth work its magic on you. Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy.

Very. Also, be prepared for worms in your diet.

very likley...unless its a densly pop. city like sydney...but there are a lot around...some even in those cities

Millions of em, but spiders Red Backs hide in toilets so sit carefully! Then theres Taipan snakes which are so angry they chase anything.
