I'll be spending two days vac in Sacramento Ca - what are the best things to see/do?

Wife and I from Scotland touring California in June - starting in Sacramento - interested in nice hotels, good food, sights, museums, history.

Hotels: I would like to recommend either the Embassy Suites in Old Sacramento or Le Rivage (a brand new five star suite hotel). both are on the Sacramento River and offer a unique ambiance.

Old Sacramento has the flavor of the 1850's gold mining era. It is a little bit touristy, but I recommend the Railroad Museum or Discovery Museum there.

In downtown at 10th and R there is the California History museum which is new and really nice. Definitely walk up to the state Capitol (at 10th and M) -- you probably won't see Ahnold but it's impressive to go in and look around.

If you can be in Sacramento on the second Saturday in June, our midtown district has an art walk where all the galleries are open at night. It's really fun and lively: you walk everywhere. Bands play on the street. Lots to see but essentially free.

Check out Streets of London pub on J Street if you are homesick. Pub food (casual) with a Brit-rock juke box. Other restaurants I'd recommend in Sacramento proper are: Zocalo, Chicago Fire, Paragary's, 33rd Street Bistro. You can look on yelp.com for some reviews.

I'm assuming you will stay in Sacramento city rather than the suburbs. Hope this was helpful!

well sacremento was where gold was first found. definley go to old town sacremento.

Here are some suggestions. you can probably find more information on them doing an Internet search:

Crocker Art Museum
Sutter's Fort
State Capitol Building
Old Sacramento & Railroad Museum
Sacramento River Cats Triple A Baseball
Arden Fair Mall (huge two-story shopping mall)

There are many great restaurants in the area...depends on what kind of food you like. And some fairly nice hotels, although living in the area I don't pay too much attention to the hotels.

the people above me gave great suggestions. I might add that you should prepare for hot weather; Sacramento is typically around 100 degrees F in june, if you've never been in that kind of heat it can be a shock. Definitely dress for warm weather.

Also, where else are you going in CA? I have lived in different parts of the state and traveled all over it, be glad to help.

The California Gold Rush area is just a short drive from Sacramento. You can visit historic mining towns, explore caves, go antique shopping, and enjoy wine tasting at wineries.
