What is the bus system like in San Antonio Texas and other transportation services?

As the previous responders have said, the Via metro bus system is very good, in the areas it covers. Unfortunately, as the city has grown, the system has not been able to expand to meet all areas of the city. The areas outside Loop 1604 are very limited. Additionally, there is the issue of whether you need the buses in the later hours.

At one time, due to an injury, I could not drive, and used the bus to get to work. I, usually, had no problem getting to work within a half hour of my desired time, but I often was unable to get home, as the service to that area stopped before I was through for the evening.

They do have a nice system, which enables you to plan your trips, and determine your timing. See the following site:
http://www.viainfo.net/

Via does have special services for the disabled, there is information at the above website if that applies to you.

Taxis are available in the city, and most are very nice. However, as San Antonio is a very spread out city, these can be quite expensive for many trips. I have spent $60 to go 1/2 way across town, when I needed to go somewhere and was unable to get a bus (again driving was impossible at the time due to an injury) and $60 to get back. This gets expensive after very few trips.

There is unfortunately, no rapid transit in the city. It would be very nice to have a metrorail system to take you from the outlying areas to downtown. Or like this weekend, rather than spend 1 1/2 hours waiting in traffic to get into and out of the Rodeo. If you have lived or spent a great amount of time in an area like Washington, DC with a nice metro system, you get spoiled.

San Antonio has a great bus system. Not as many taxis as other major cities and no trains

The system for the buses is great downtown. In other parts of the city it might depend on the bus driver or the number of bus times and routes available. For example, in my area north of the airport, the bus runs every hour from 7am until 11pm. If you miss the bus, you have to wait an hour. The good thing is that we are within 2 miles from a major hub so we can transfer quickly to areas all around the city.

Taxis are fast. A bit more expensive of course. There are no trams or trolleys.

the majority of people here drive, but we do have a good bus system.
