How many different gangs are there in and around San Antonio, TX?

How many different gangs are there in and around San Antonio, TX?

It would depend on your concept of gangs. The definition of gang is: a group of people who form an alliance for a common purpose and engage in violent or criminal activity. Now some gangs have national ties, where there are also the local street gangs. As many have mentioned above there are gangs in the city influenced by the Crips and the Bloods, but especially the Surenos. Also there are the People and Folk Nations groups, and the various skinhead and other hate related gangs. Also included in gangs are taggers, and car clubs which engage in illegal activities. The SAPD currently lists 690 different gangs here in San Antonio. Police say there are at least 8,000 known gang members, not including the gang members police don't know about.

The number of gangs is much larger than the one or two mentioned above, and happens in all areas of the city, including the Northside, contrary to Lalana's belief. There was recently a drive-by shooting in the Stone Oak area, considered by many to be the bastion of WASP in the Northeast part of the city.

Also, in response to another comment made previously, while I do not want to see anyone abused or anyone's rights or liberties abused, I support, and think we should all support and appreciate, our San Antonio Police Department, who do a very difficult job keeping a rapidly growing city as safe as this city is, with the limits of government funding.

If you are really curious, contact the San Antonio Police Department Gang Unit: S.A.P.D. Gang Unit - 207-7152

They also have information related to the different types of gang activity in the city.

One gang is one too many.

I know of the Crips and the Bloods. I don't think the gangs are a real problem to those of us on the Northside. They usually hang on the east and west sides or terrorize the South. we have a lot of nasty policemen who rile them and if anyone is a gang, I would call the nasty police a gang who infringe on everyone's rights, but they are probably nasty to make sure the "unauthorized" gangs stay away.

I ahve no idea how many gangs are in San Antonio, I know that the 'Mexican Mafia' has been a problem in San Antonio and South Texas for many years now.
