Suggest a place to live in Seattle?

I'm moving to Seattle in a few days and so I'm going through the whole "find an apartment" thing. Can anyone that's been there a while suggest some apartments where I could get a 1br around $600 and not in a crime-ridden area or other problems? Perhaps a place you've lived in before and was ok. I'm mostly looking at Tacoma in the North End but I'm not picky.

You won't find anything in Seattle itself for $600, unless if you want to share a place (become a roommate).
In Tacoma, a city about 40 minutes south (without traffic :)), there should be more options, but not that many either. But If you're not too picky about the neighborhood, you can find even 2 bedroom apartments there for that price range.

A good source to start looking is Craigslist: seattle.craigslist.org
Then look under housing.

I hope that if you choose to live in Tacoma, that you won't have to commute to Seattle, because that's a real hassle, especially during rush hour.
If you will work in Seattle, I would pick a place in Seattle itself or the areas around it.
