Seatt;e downtown - walking? or do I need a cab?

We are staying at a hotel right by the Pike Place. We would like to see the Pike Place, have lunch at Wild Ginger Restarant, and also see my grandparents who live in Main street in Seattle. Is everything good by foot? Or do I need a cab? Specifically, if I want to get to Main Street from the Pike Place area, is it a nice stroll? or is it highway etc. that I really should get a cab? thanks!

I'm pretty sure there is no Main Street in Seattle.

The walk from Pike Place to Wild Ginger is about 5 blocks. The end of PP near the museum is the easiest, no straight uphill walking and it'll put you about a block or two away from Wild Ginger.

If you mean S Main Street, you will definitely want a cab. Not a safe area at all and you would have to cross/go under I-5.

Seattle is amazing by foot, but if you plan on traveling longer than you are willing to walk, like visiting your grandparents on Main, then take Metro. Metro is the city's bus system, look 'em up on google: "Seattle Metro". It's a cheap and great way to travel through the city without wearing the souls out of your shoes. Then again, if you're into walking then by all means do. Seattle has quite a few hills, but not quite as bad as San Francisco. So, your answer is mixed. If you're up to it-walk, if not-don't ride a cab, take Metro.

Main street is in Pioneer Square, maybe 10 blocks south of Pike Place market, so definitely within walking distance.

Everything should be pretty good to access by foot! Seattle's downtown area is surprisingly small, in comparison to many other "comparable" cities. You'll be able to walk just about anywhere you want to get and also, within the downtown corridor, there is what is known as the "Ride Free" zone for buses, which means that you can ride the buses for free within this zone. This is 7-days a week, but not 24 hours. The Ride-Free Zone is good until 7pm. It's basically to encourage people to just hop on the buses instead of further congesting the downtown area with more driving and is really convenient for people like you who are visiting the downtown area!

everything is good by foot :) i walked around the whole downtown seattle by the pier by foot and if you want to go up north just take the bus up there! to northgate mall and if you dont feel like walking take the bus, everything is really close and plus seattle is beaufitul!

You can walk.
Wild Ginger is very much over rated.
Go to Schuckers Fish Restaurant on Fourth Avenue, in the Olympic Hotel. The Fresh Fish is great. or for Italian - go to Tulios on Fifth Avenue.

Most everywhere downtown is pretty walkable...if not, the downtown Seattle area is a RIDE-FREE bus area. Meaning, you hop on...and as long as you are within downtown limits you get off where you want and the ride is free. I'm not sure where Wild Ginger is, or where you plan on going on Main Street, but it shouldn't be hard.

Depending on the weather and time of day, a walk is possible.

Here's another alternative

Ride Free Area

Riding Metro Transit is free between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily in Downtown Seattle.

The Ride Free Area (RFA) extends from the north at Battery St. to S. Jackson St. on the south, and east at 6th Avenue to the waterfront on the west. Metro routes 116, 118 and 119 are not included in the Ride Free area.
